Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Ohio Valley

Refrigerator Not Cooling

A fridge that runs but doesn't cool is usually an airflow, frost, or dirty-coil problem, and we diagnose it across Louisville and the river counties. The milk is warm, the light works, maybe you hear a hum, but the shelves sit at room temperature and the freezer has gone soft. It's one of the calls we take most. Here's what it usually means.

What "running but not cooling" actually tells us

A fridge does not make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. So when food goes warm, either the cold air isn't being made or it isn't getting where it belongs. That difference matters. If the freezer is still hard-frozen and the fresh food side is warm, air movement is the likely story. Both sides warm, and the cooling system itself is in question. Note which one you have before you call. Saves time on the phone, and it helps us bring the right part on the first trip.

Cause family one: airflow and frost

Cheapest first. Cold air gets blown from the freezer into the fridge through a vent. Block that vent with a stack of casserole dishes or a full bag of bread and the fresh food side warms up while the freezer stays fine. Frost buildup does the same thing from the inside. In our humid river-valley summers, a door that gets opened often, or a worn gasket letting moist air seep in, will grow frost fast on the evaporator. Once that coil ices over, the fan can't push air through it. You may hear the fan turn loud, then quiet, then loud again.

Cause family two: dirty coils and a hot kitchen

The condenser coil sits under or behind the fridge, and its job is to shed heat. Pack it with dust, pet hair, and the fine grit that collects in older shotgun houses with floor vents, and the heat has nowhere to go. The compressor runs longer and longer and still loses ground. Warm signs: the sides or back feel hot to the touch, the motor almost never shuts off, and July is worse than April. A fridge crowded into a tight cabinet with no breathing room behind it has the same trouble. Give it a few inches of clear space.

Cause family three: controls, fans, and sealed system

After airflow and coils, the causes get more involved. A defrost timer or thermostat can fail and leave the unit stuck. An evaporator fan motor can seize, so cold air gets made but never delivered. A condenser fan can quit, which cooks the compressor. Beyond that sits the sealed refrigerant system, and that's a different category of work. Diagnosis matters here. A warm fridge with a dead fan and a warm fridge with a refrigerant problem look identical from the kitchen. We test rather than guess. Replacing a part on a hunch is how people spend money twice.

Safe checks you can do, and where to stop

Do these first. Pull items away from the rear vents inside. Check that the temperature dial or display wasn't bumped to a warm setting, which happens more than you'd think. Feel the door gasket for gaps and clean it with mild soap. Vacuum the grille at the base. Make sure the door closes fully and the fridge isn't shoved against the wall. Confirm the outlet is live by testing a lamp in it. Stop there. Don't pull interior back panels, don't thaw coils with a hair dryer, and leave anything electrical inside the machine alone. Call us and describe what you found.

What we do differently on the visit

We arrive with meters, not opinions. We read actual temperatures in both compartments, check the defrost cycle, test fan motors under load, and look at amp draw on the compressor. We inspect the coil, the drain, and the gaskets. Limestone hard water around here is rough on ice makers and water lines, so we check those too while the panel is off. Then we tell you plainly what failed and what it takes to fix, and whether the repair makes sense for the age of the unit. If it doesn't, we say so. We repair all major brands as an independent shop.

Refrigerator Not Cooling — fast answers

Should I unplug the fridge overnight to reset it?

Unplugging for several hours can melt frost off an iced coil, and cooling may come back for a few days. That's a clue, not a fix. It points to a defrost problem that will return.

Why is my freezer cold but the fridge is warm?

That pattern usually means cold air isn't reaching the upper section. Common culprits are a frosted evaporator, a blocked interior vent, or a failed circulating fan. The cooling system itself is often fine.

How long should I wait before calling?

If food is above 40 degrees, move it to a cooler now. Try the simple checks the same day. If nothing changes within a few hours of cooling time, call us.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Ring us or fill in the form, then describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and rough age help too. Those small details narrow down the part before anyone drives to your door.

  2. Step 2

    We set a window

You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours, and we text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls. Tell us where the machine sits.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose and repair

Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return trip before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements and clogs dishwasher jets, and it crusts up valves until they stick. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup behind it, then tell you how to slow the next round down.
  • River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings and sours washer gaskets, and it stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms have it worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
  • Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us, and no brand tells us what to say. When we talk about repairing versus replacing, that advice is ours alone.
  • Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens come with narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds and protect trim, and heavy units move slowly. When we leave, the only change in your house should be a working appliance.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
