Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Ohio Valley

Ice Maker Repair — Book a Visit Today

We repair refrigerator ice makers, and the fastest thing you can tell us on the phone is what the cubes look like. Small ones, cloudy ones, hollow shells, or a single gray brick in the bin all point different directions. Behind those you usually find a frozen fill tube, a tired water inlet valve, a failed thermostat or module, or a saddle valve choked with limestone scale, which is the Ohio Valley's calling card. Our visit starts with water pressure at the valve and temperature in the freezer, because both of those fake a dozen other problems. Then we test the harvest cycle, check the fill line for ice plugs, and look at the age of the filter. We work on all major brands as an independent shop. Call us.

Ice Maker Repair — residential ice maker being serviced

The ice maker symptoms we hear most

  • Cubes are tiny and hollow Low water pressure, a clogged filter, or a partly frozen fill tube
  • It makes ice but tastes like the freezer Old filter, absorbed odors, or stale ice sitting in the bin
  • Water on the floor under the fridge Leaking inlet valve, cracked supply line, or a fill tube out of alignment
  • Whole bin is one frozen slab Slow melt and refreeze from door seals, overfill, or a stuck ejector
  • Arm is down but nothing happens Failed control module or thermostat, or no water reaching the valve

Safe things to check first

Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.

  • 1Make sure the wire arm or switch is in the on position. It gets bumped constantly.
  • 2Look at the shutoff valve behind or under the fridge and confirm it is all the way open, not half-turned.
  • 3Note the age of the water filter. Six months past due is a common cause of thin cubes.
  • 4Set a glass of water in the freezer for an hour. If it does not freeze solid, that tells us something about temperature.

Ice Maker Repair — quick answers

Why did my ice maker stop after we changed the filter?

Air gets trapped in the line during a filter swap, and sometimes the filter is not seated all the way, which blocks flow. Run several glasses from the dispenser to purge the air. Then give it a full day to cycle again.

Is hard water really hurting my ice maker?

Yes. Limestone scale builds up inside the inlet valve and fill tube, narrowing the opening a little at a time. Cubes get smaller, then they stop. Regular filter changes slow that down, but scaled parts eventually have to be replaced.

How long should a new ice maker take to make ice?

Plan on about twenty-four hours for the first useful batch. The freezer needs to hold a steady temperature before the harvest cycle runs reliably. If nothing shows up after a full day, something upstream needs looking at.

Can you fix just the ice maker, or is it the whole fridge?

Often just the ice maker. But a freezer running warm, a failing defrost system, or bad door seals can all show up as an ice problem first, so we check the surrounding causes before we swap the unit.

My ice smells bad. Is that a repair?

Usually it is not a mechanical failure. Ice picks up odors from open food and from a bin that has sat too long. Dump the bin, wash it, and replace the filter. If the smell comes back fast, call us and we will look further.

Do you work on ice makers in older homes?

We do. Older shotgun houses often have small-diameter or corroded supply lines and aging saddle valves feeding the fridge. That plumbing side matters as much as the appliance does, so we check it while we are there.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Ring us or fill in the form, then describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and rough age help too. Those small details narrow down the part before anyone drives to your door.

  2. Step 2

    We set a window

You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours, and we text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls. Tell us where the machine sits.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose and repair

Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return trip before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements and clogs dishwasher jets, and it crusts up valves until they stick. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup behind it, then tell you how to slow the next round down.
  • River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings and sours washer gaskets, and it stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms have it worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
  • Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us, and no brand tells us what to say. When we talk about repairing versus replacing, that advice is ours alone.
  • Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens come with narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds and protect trim, and heavy units move slowly. When we leave, the only change in your house should be a working appliance.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
