What the minerals actually do inside the machine
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water heats or sits still, those minerals drop out and stick to metal. In a dishwasher they coat the heating element and clog the spray arm holes. In a washer they build up in the valve screens and the pump. In a water heater they settle on the bottom as a gritty layer. Scale does not conduct heat well. So the element runs longer and hotter to do the same job. That heat stresses the element, the thermostat, and the seals around them. Nothing fails on day one. It fails two or three years earlier than it should have.
The simple habit that prevents most of it
Run an empty hot cycle with a descaler or plain white vinegar in your dishwasher and your washing machine. Dishwasher: two cups of vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, hottest cycle, no detergent, no dishes. Washer: pour it in the drum, run a hot cycle empty. While you are in there, pull the dishwasher's bottom rack and pop off the spray arm if it twists free by hand. Hold it up to the light. If the holes look pinched, poke them clear with a toothpick and rinse. Wipe the door gasket. That is the whole job, about ten minutes.
How often, honestly
In the Ohio Valley, every one to two months. If your glasses go cloudy sooner, go monthly. Well water usually needs it more than city water. Add two more small habits. Keep the dishwasher's rinse aid reservoir filled, since rinse aid helps water sheet off instead of drying into spots. And check the fridge water filter date, because a loaded filter and hard water together push scale into the ice maker. Write the dates on a piece of tape inside the cabinet door. Our humidity already makes gaskets work hard. Do not make them fight mineral crust too.
Signs prevention time has passed
Watch for these. Dishes come out gritty, not just spotted, meaning scale is flaking off the element. The dishwasher runs a long time and the dishes are still cool at the end. Ice cubes come out small, hollow, or smell off. The washer takes forever to fill, or fills unevenly on hot. Water heater rumbling or popping when it heats. Faucet aerators clog again a week after cleaning. Any of that means buildup is already inside components you cannot reach with vinegar and a toothpick. Stop DIY at that point. It helps a lot. Softened water leaves far less scale on heating elements and valves. You still want the occasional vinegar cycle, since soap residue and slime build up on their own even in soft water.
Is vinegar safe for my dishwasher?
An occasional empty vinegar cycle is fine in most machines. Do not leave vinegar sitting for hours, and skip it if your manual says so. Never mix vinegar with bleach or with detergent in the same run.
Can hard water damage be reversed?
Light buildup, yes, with regular descaling. Once an element is thickly crusted or a pump is jammed with mineral grit, the part usually needs replacing. That is the point to have someone look at it.
