Age matters, but not the way you'd think
A dishwasher that's eight or nine years old isn't automatically done. What matters more is how it's been living. Around Louisville, our hard water is rough on these machines. Limestone scale builds on the heating element, the spray arms, and the wash pump seals. A five-year-old unit in a house with no softener can look older inside than a ten-year-old one that's been treated well. So we open it up and look at the actual wear. Rust at the tub seam, a soft or crumbling bottom, a rotted door gasket track. Those tell us more than the date on the tag.
The fault type usually decides it
Some failures are routine. A clogged drain hose, a stuck check valve, a bad drain pump, a worn door latch, a failed float switch, a spray arm that won't spin, all normal repairs on a normal machine. Other failures are a different animal. A leaking tub, a cracked sump housing, or a wash motor that's seized after years of scale usually means replacing the expensive heart of the machine. Control boards land in the middle. If the board is available and everything else is solid, fixing it makes sense. If the board is discontinued and the tub is rusting, that's a different conversation.

Why are my dishes gritty even though the dishwasher runs?
Usually hard water scale or a clogged filter and spray arms. Pull the bottom rack, lift out the filter, and rinse it. If the holes in the spray arms are plugged with mineral crust, that's a fixable problem.
There's standing water in the bottom. Is that serious?
Not always. It's often a clogged drain hose, a plugged filter, or a blocked air gap at the sink. A failed drain pump is also common, and that's a routine repair on a sound machine.
How do I know if the tub is leaking versus the door?
Door leaks show water at the front, along the base near the latch. Tub leaks show up under the unit or in the basement below. Tub leaks are the serious kind and usually point to replacement.
