So the first thing we ask is where the mess is. Film on everything points to water chemistry or temperature. Chunks of debris redeposited on the top rack points to a clogged filter or drain. One clean corner and one filthy corner points to blocked spray arms or a rack loaded so tall the arm can't spin. Pattern matters more than the smell.

This is the cheapest fix and it's the real answer more often than people expect. Bottom filters pack with seeds, labels, and grease. Spray arm holes plug with limestone scale and toothpick shards. Tall cutting boards and cookie sheets on the left side block the arm's swing. Detergent that's old, caked, or stuck in a closed dispenser never dissolves. Powder that sat in a humid basement is basically a rock. Overloading is the other half. If plates shingle against each other, the water never reaches the middle of the stack.
Cause family two: water that's too cool or too hard
Dishwasher detergent needs hot water to work. If the water heater is set low, or the kitchen is at the far end of a long run in an older shotgun house, the first fill arrives lukewarm. Run the kitchen tap hot before you start the cycle. That one habit fixes a lot of complaints. Hard water is the other half of the valley problem. Limestone minerals leave a chalky haze on glasses and dull the inside of the tub. Rinse aid helps. So does a periodic cleaning cycle with a dishwasher-safe descaler.
Cause family three: pump, valve, or spray pressure
If the basics check out, the machine may not be moving water the way it should. A weak wash pump, a partly blocked circulation path, a failing inlet valve that underfills, or a diverter that won't switch between upper and lower arms will all leave dishes dirty while the cycle looks normal. Signs we listen for: a quiet wash with no rhythmic spray sound, a cycle that runs much longer than usual, or standing water at the bottom after the cycle ends. These are inside-the-machine issues. Should I rinse my dishes before loading?
