What a Dead Element Is Really Telling You
Electric cooktops heat by pushing current through a coil or a ribbon under glass. When one spot stays cold, current is stopping somewhere between the knob and the coil. That gap is short. On coil-top ranges it's often the plug-in connection at the element. On smooth tops it's the element itself or the control board that switches it. If every element is dead, think power supply instead — a tripped breaker or a half-fed 240-volt circuit. One cold burner with three good ones is a local fault. All four cold is a feed problem. Knowing which one you have saves a lot of guessing.
Cause Family One: The Connection at the Element
On plug-in coil ranges, the element pushes into a receptacle block under the drip pan. Boil-overs and years of Ohio Valley humidity corrode those contacts. The coil arcs, pits the terminal, and then makes contact only sometimes. That's the burner that works when you wiggle the pan. It's the cheapest family of causes and the most common on older shotgun-house kitchens with 1970s ranges still in service. The fix is a new element, a new receptacle block, or both. Terminals that look black or melted don't clean up. They get replaced, because a bad contact keeps generating heat where heat doesn't belong.
Cause Family Two: The Element or Its Switch
Coils and ribbon elements burn open. Inside is a resistance wire, and after enough heat cycles it breaks. Nothing looks wrong from the outside. Sometimes you'll see one bright blister or a small split in the coil sheath. The other half of this family is the infinite switch — the part behind the knob that cycles power on and off to set heat level. A failing switch gives you full blast with no simmer, or no heat at all, or heat that stops after a few minutes. Both parts are replaceable. Which one it is comes down to a resistance and voltage check, not looks.
Cause Family Three: Control Board, Sensor, or Power Feed
Smooth-top cooktops often switch elements through a control board with touch keys. Boards fail, keypads stop registering, and radiant elements with limit sensors will shut down if the sensor reads wrong. Hard water film and cleaner residue under a cracked glass top can also cause trouble. Then there's the feed: a 240-volt circuit runs on two hot legs. Lose one leg to a weak breaker and half your cooktop dies while the clock stays lit. That symptom fools a lot of people into buying parts they don't need. It's why we check the supply before we condemn a board.
Safe Checks You Can Do Before You Call
Unplug the range or shut the breaker off first. On a coil top, lift the cold element straight out, look at the two prongs and the socket, and note any black scorching or a loose fit. Reseat it firmly. Then restore power and test on high. Check the breaker panel for a tripped double breaker. Try the cold burner's knob position on another element if your model allows swapping coils. Stop there. Don't open the back panel, don't probe terminals, don't test with the power on. Can I just swap a coil element myself?
On plug-in coil ranges, often yes — power off, pull it straight out, push the new one in. But if the receptacle behind it is scorched or loose, a new coil will fail too. Have the socket checked.
Why does my burner heat, then shut off?
That's usually a cycling infinite switch, a corroded contact arcing open as it heats, or a radiant limit sensor cutting power. All three look identical from the kitchen. A meter tells them apart.
Half my cooktop is dead. Bad board?
Maybe not. A 240-volt range runs on two hot legs. Lose one at the breaker and half the elements quit while lights and clock stay on. We check the feed first.
