Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Ohio Valley

Built-In Microwave Repairs

We repair built-in and over-the-range microwaves, and the first thing we do is tell you whether yours is worth fixing. A countertop unit you can just replace. A built-in is different, because the cutout in the cabinet was cut for that model and the trim kit goes with it. So when the plate spins and nothing gets hot, or the latch sticks, or the whole thing goes dark halfway through the popcorn, call before you go shopping. Here's how we think it through.

Age tells us a lot before we open the door

A built-in that's only a few years old is usually worth fixing. The cutout was made for that exact model and the trim matches, so you keep the fit. Past the ten-year mark we get more careful, since older boards go out of production and door assemblies get scarce. Even so, plenty of older over-the-range units in Louisville kitchens are mechanically fine. They're just running hot because the vent is packed with grease. We look at how the unit has been used, not only the date on the sticker. Heavy daily cooking under a bad vent ages a microwave faster than the calendar does.

The fault type matters more than the age

Some failures are routine. Door switches wear out and quit telling the microwave it's safe to run. Turntable motors seize, control panels lose a few buttons, vent fans and light sockets give up. Those are common parts and we stock or order them. Other failures sit on the far side of the line. When the part that makes the heat is gone, along with the high-voltage components around it, the job gets bigger and the math changes. We find out which side of that line your unit is on early in the visit and tell you plainly. No guessing from the driveway.

Parts availability decides more calls than you'd think

Diagnosing is rarely the hard part. Getting the part is. Some manufacturers keep control boards on the shelf for years, and some discontinue a door assembly two model years after it came out. Before we recommend a repair we check what's actually available for your model and serial number. If the part exists and ships, repair usually makes sense on a built-in. If the only listing is a used board from a source nobody can vouch for, we'll say that. Better you hear it now than wait three weeks for a part that never shows.

What happens during our visit

We start with what you noticed. When did it quit? Was there a sound, a smell, any sparking? Then we run the unit if it's safe to, check door alignment and the latch, look at the vent path for grease, and read whatever code the panel shows. Over-the-range units get extra attention at the mounting plate and the ductwork, because a blocked vent slowly cooks the electronics sitting above your range. After that we tell you what failed, whether the part can be had, and what the repair involves. You decide from there. Call us and we'll get you on the schedule.

When replacing honestly wins

Sometimes we'll tell you to go shopping. If the high-voltage side has failed on a unit past its first decade, replacement usually makes better sense. A rusted-through cavity or cracked door glass means the unit isn't safe to run, period. And if your model was discontinued and no board exists anywhere, there's nothing for us to install. One more: if you've already replaced two major components in the same year, that microwave is telling you something. We'd rather lose the repair than sell you a fix that fails again in four months.

Built-In Microwave Repairs — fast answers

Is a built-in microwave worth repairing at all?

Often it is, because the cutout and trim were built around that model. Replacing it means matching dimensions or reworking cabinetry. A door switch, turntable motor, or fan repair leaves the existing fit alone.

My microwave runs but food stays cold. What's that mean?

You've got power and working controls, but the heating side isn't producing. That's a real diagnosis rather than a quick fix. We test it at your house and tell you whether the parts are still available for your model.

Can I clean the vent filter myself?

Yes. On over-the-range units the grease filters slide out from underneath, and you can wash them or swap in new ones. Clean filters help the unit run cooler. Leave the panel and interior work to us.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Ring us or fill in the form, then describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and rough age help too. Those small details narrow down the part before anyone drives to your door.

  2. Step 2

    We set a window

You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours, and we text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls. Tell us where the machine sits.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose and repair

Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return trip before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements and clogs dishwasher jets, and it crusts up valves until they stick. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup behind it, then tell you how to slow the next round down.
  • River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings and sours washer gaskets, and it stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms have it worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
  • Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us, and no brand tells us what to say. When we talk about repairing versus replacing, that advice is ours alone.
  • Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens come with narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds and protect trim, and heavy units move slowly. When we leave, the only change in your house should be a working appliance.

  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
