Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Ohio Valley
Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot
If your dryer tumbles but the clothes come out damp and cool, the heat side has quit and the motor side is fine. Nothing smells burnt, nothing tripped the breaker, and the load never dries. That split is a common call for us in Louisville and across the valley. Here's how we work through it.

What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer turns the drum and heats the air, and those two jobs run on separate parts. Drum still spinning means the motor and belt are fine, so we quit looking there. The trouble is on the heat side: the airflow path, a safety device that cut power to the heat, or the element or gas igniter itself. That narrows the list fast. It also means the machine usually isn't ruined. A lot of the time a part did exactly what it was built to do and shut off the heat because the dryer got too hot. Something made it too hot. That something is the actual repair.
Start with airflow, because it's the cheapest cause
Most no-heat calls we run trace back to blocked venting. Lint packs the duct behind the dryer, in the wall run, or out at the outside flap. Heat builds up inside, and a thermal fuse or limit switch cuts the heating circuit to protect the machine. Drum keeps turning, air stays cool. Long vent runs in older Louisville houses make it worse, since a shotgun home may push exhaust thirty feet before it reaches daylight. Our river humidity means lint clumps up damp and sticks instead of blowing free. Venting is the first thing we look at, and honestly the first thing you should look at too.
Safe checks you can do before calling
Pull the dryer out and disconnect the flex duct from the back, then look inside both ends. A felt mat of lint in there is your answer. Next, go outside and find the vent hood while a load runs. You should feel steady warm air pushing that flap open. Weak flow or none at all means a clog in the wall. Clean the lint screen and rinse it under water, because fabric softener leaves an invisible film that chokes air. Check that the breaker for the dryer is fully on, and on an electric dryer, that both halves of a double breaker are seated. Stop there. Don't take panels off.
When it's a failed part, not a clog
If the venting is clear and it still won't heat, we're into components. Electric dryers have a heating element that can burn open, plus a thermal fuse, a cycling thermostat, and a high-limit switch, and any one of those breaks the heat circuit. Gas dryers have an igniter, gas valve coils, and a flame sensor. The igniter glows, the coils have to open the valve, and weak coils give you a glow with no flame. Control boards and timers fail too, just less often. Sorting all that out takes a meter and a wiring diagram. Guessing at parts gets expensive and rarely lands right.
What we do differently on the service call
We test instead of swapping parts. A meter tells us whether an element has continuity, whether a thermostat is open, whether the coils pull the way they should. We also look for why the fuse blew in the first place, because replacing it without fixing the airflow just blows another one next week. We check the vent run end to end, the exhaust temperature, and how the dryer cycles under load. Hard water and valley humidity around here put extra work on a dryer, so we look at the whole picture rather than one part. Then we tell you what we found in plain words before anything gets replaced. Call us and tell us what you're seeing.
Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot — fast answers
Can a clogged vent really stop the heat completely?
Yes. Trapped heat trips a thermal fuse or limit switch, and that cuts the heating circuit while the motor keeps running. Clearing the vent is step one, but a blown fuse still has to be replaced.
Is it safe to keep using the dryer with no heat?
It won't dry clothes, and running it just hides the real problem. If you smell anything hot or burnt, unplug it or shut off the gas valve and stop. Otherwise leave it off until somebody looks at it.
Why did this happen right after I cleaned the lint screen?
Screen lint is only part of the story. The duct behind the machine and inside the wall holds far more. A clean screen with a packed duct still starves the dryer of airflow and trips the heat safety.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Ring us or fill in the form, then describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and rough age help too. Those small details narrow down the part before anyone drives to your door.
- Step 2
We set a window
You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours, and we text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls. Tell us where the machine sits.
- Step 3
Diagnose and repair
Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return trip before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements and clogs dishwasher jets, and it crusts up valves until they stick. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup behind it, then tell you how to slow the next round down.
- River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings and sours washer gaskets, and it stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms have it worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
- Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us, and no brand tells us what to say. When we talk about repairing versus replacing, that advice is ours alone.
- Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens come with narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds and protect trim, and heavy units move slowly. When we leave, the only change in your house should be a working appliance.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
